Shakespeare had a very successful career as a writer and businessman working in the London theatre industry during the last decade of the sixteenth century and the first decade of the seventeenth century. Why Shakespeare remains famous after all this time, however, is that he wrote plays that are even more popular today than they were during his lifetime.
