When I read the play as a high school freshman, I constantly said I disliked how sexist Shakespeare was. I didn’t know ANYTHING about him, other than I had to read a play where a woman is treated like an animal and “Tamed”. I didn’t realize Shakespeare wasn’t saying it was a GOOD thing. He was just saying it was done. If we cannot accept that it happened, we choose to ignore the past violence against women. I now appreciate it in a new light, and adore almost all things Shakespeare (With the exception of A Winters tale, bc that’s just objectively the most boring one)

After the play we came out gasping with emotion and wanted to see it again and again. Thank you to the esteemed Shakespeare and the creators of the plays!

I did the translation into Russian and shared it on several local sites (russian sites, i mean). Many readers agreed with your opinion given in the article and drew a parallel between “cancelation” companies and Nazis, who had gone so far to burn books and … people. Probably, it was their “cancelation” company.
However, i’d like to thank you for this article.

And you are right about The M of V. It is a play about anti-semitism, not an anti-semitic play, a distinction sadly lost on many. I would disagree however that we ‘like’ the Venetian Christians; they are, esp Antonio, thoroughly unpleasant, and yes, anti-semitic.
