Want to know where Antony and Cleopatra is set? See each setting Shakespeare used in the play on the map below.
Shakespeare set Antony and Cleopatra in the Roman Empire, in the whole of the world as it was known in the first century. There are two main locations, however: Rome, and Alexandria in Egypt. Antony has abandoned life in Rome, where everything is masculine, disciplined and clear cut. he has fallen in love with the Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, and now lives in Alexandria where everything is soft, feminine, emotional, with no boundaries. So what Shakespeare is doing with these locations is present Antony as a soldier who is on an upward spiritual journey through the agency of love. He is transformed into a softer, more insightful person than he had been as one of the rulers of Rome and its greatest soldier. By the end of the play we can see that the characters in Egypt have gone headlong for love, while the Rome characters are still narrow, materialistic, and lacking in understanding of the spiritual dimension.
