Shakespeare set Henry IV Part 2 at the end of Henry IV’s reign and ends with Prince Hal becoming Henry V. The action is divided among the royal palace in Whitehall, the Boar’s Head Tavern in Eastcheap, London, and Gloucestershire. Each of the locations is important. The Court is a solemn place without laughter, full of the seriousness of state matters. The Boar’s Head Tavern is where the drunkards and scoundrels are to be found and it full of laughter, without any sense of responsibility. Gloucestershire represents rural England. Falstaff takes a tour of Gloucestershire, recruiting men for his army. Shakespeare, therefore, gives us a wide view of England in this play – the court, the  life of ordinary town people, and country life
