Shakespeare set Henry IV Part 1 mainly in England and partly in Wales, in palaces, inns, and various battlefields. The period is during the reign of Henry IV. The main action takes place in and around London, where the young Prince Henry, known to his friends as Hal, spends most of his days in the Boars Head Tavern in Eastcheap, drinking sweet wine with the lowlife drunkards and thieves. The Eastcheap of this play is very much a portrait of the Elizabethan Eastcheap, where Shakespeare himself, no doubt hung out. Shakespeare places Hal among these people to learn what ordinary people are like, something kings seldom have the chance to discover. It allows him to emerge as the great King Henry V on the death of his father.
