Hi Bryan, Shakespeare was writing in the late Elizabethan/early Jacobean period when the language was undergoing its biggest change ever due to scores of play writers writing in the language used by their audiences – more relaxed than the formal written language of philosophers etc. Unlike in Latin languages like Italian and Spanish, inflections had disappeared from English. Shakespeare writing “…..almost anticked us all” is doing one of his tricks – inventing words. He’s changing the word ‘antic’ (fool) to a verb – the action of the antic. It’s like me saying “This man is a clown – this man clowned his way around town.” I have changed the noun to a verb. It has nothing to do with the redundant suffixes.

Thanks,
John

In paragraph 2, it mentions that inflectional endings had “largely disappeared.” However, in the next paragraph, I felt like you were saying that they were still being used. I am working on a research paper on this topic, and I was wondering if you could verify whether the inflectional endings were appearing or disappearing?
